Cyprus for Ukrainians in 2026 means above all temporary protection: by decision of the Cyprus Council of Ministers it has been extended automatically to 04.03.2027 for everyone who received this status in Cyprus. Current beneficiaries file neither a new application nor a new biometric permit, but the extension notice must be collected in person at the head office of the Asylum Service in Nicosia. New applications for temporary protection are accepted only in person in Nicosia; online filing has closed. An EU decision extends protection to 04.03.2028, yet as of 10.10.2026 Cyprus has issued no national decision for that period. Years under temporary protection do not count towards citizenship, so for those planning to stay the key question is moving to a separate residence ground. Checked against the Asylum Service announcement of 17.06.2026 and the legislation on 10.10.2026.

What temporary protection provides
Directive 2001/55/EC, on which the status rests, requires member states to give persons under temporary protection a residence permit for the whole period, access to employment and self-employment, suitable accommodation, medical care and education for minors. In Cyprus the Asylum Service grants the status and the Migration Department issues the biometric permit. The scope of social support and the practical steps to access services in Cyprus are checked for each family individually.
What happens after 04.03.2027
Whether Cyprus will follow the EU decision and extend protection to 04.03.2028 had not been announced as of 10.10.2026. We found no national mechanism on Cyprus government websites for switching from temporary protection to another status. So the plan for afterwards rests on independent grounds, each with its own requirements:
- Digital Nomad for those working remotely for a foreign employer or clients with net income from €3,500 a month. The Migration Department expressly allows this application to be filed in Nicosia by someone already residing lawfully in Cyprus under another status.
- Employment in a company of foreign interests: from €2,500 gross a month, a contract of at least 2 years, processing in 1 month. Details: Cyprus residence permit.
- Business immigration: the Startup Visa (until December 2026) or your own company of foreign interests.
- Investor permit: from €300,000 and income from €50,000 a year, permanent residence at once.
Work, business and taxes
If you work remotely or plan a Cyprus company, keep in mind that registering a company does not change your residence status by itself. Spending more than 183 days a year in Cyprus raises the question of tax residence; from 2026 the personal tax-free band in Cyprus is €22,000 a year.
