Portugal golden visa
quote after we review the task
The Portugal golden visa (ARI, autorização de residência para investimento) operates without real estate in 2026: Law 56/2023 removed property purchases and plain capital transfers. Five options remain: creating 10 jobs, €500,000 in scientific research, €250,000 in culture and heritage, €500,000 in Portuguese non-real-estate investment funds, or €500,000 to set up or recapitalise a company with 5 permanent jobs. The investment is held for at least 5 years, and the minimum stay is only 7 days in the first year and 14 days in each following two-year period. Permanent residence opens after 5 years; naturalisation for Ukrainian and other non-EU, non-CPLP nationals after 10 years of legal residence. Facts checked against the AIMA website on 9 October 2026.
What we do
- Check which ARI option fits your capital and goals.
- Review the fund or project against AIMA requirements: maturity, share invested in Portuguese companies.
- Prepare the ARI Portal pre-registration and the investor and family file.
- Handle renewals and the move to permanent residence.
- Align the investment with your tax model and ownership structure.
What we need from you
- Passport and proof of legal entry.
- A criminal record certificate issued no more than 3 months before filing, with a translation.
- Proof of the source of funds and of the international transfer.
- Health insurance or SNS coverage.
ARI investment options in 2026
| Option (Art. 3 of the Foreigners Act) | Amount or condition | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Job creation | At least 10 jobs (8 in low-density territories) | Employment contracts, bank declaration of the transfer |
| Scientific research | From €500,000 (€400,000 in low-density territories) | Declaration from a research institution in the national system |
| Culture and heritage | From €250,000 | GEPAC declaration on the nature of the investment |
| Investment funds | From €500,000 in Portuguese non-real-estate funds, fund maturity of at least 5 years, at least 60% invested in Portuguese companies | Certificate of units, management company declaration |
| Company and jobs | From €500,000 to set up or recapitalise a company with 5 permanent jobs (or keep 10 jobs, 5 of them permanent) for at least 3 years | Commercial registry certificate, share purchase agreement |
Each of these investments must stay out of real estate, directly and indirectly. You can invest personally or through a single-member Lda in which you are the member.
What ARI gives you
- entry to Portugal without a residence visa;
- the right to live and work in Portugal;
- visa-free travel within the Schengen area;
- family reunification, which can be filed together with the investor’s application;
- the right to apply for permanent residence under the Foreigners Act and for naturalisation under the Nationality Law.
Minimum stay
AIMA requires at least 7 days, consecutive or not, in the first year and 14 days in each subsequent two-year period. Permanent residence and citizenship follow the general periods: 5 years of legal residence for a permanent permit and 10 years for naturalisation of Ukrainian and other non-EU, non-CPLP nationals under Organic Law 1/2026. How a short physical presence affects the assessment of ties to Portugal at naturalisation is something we review case by case.
The investor’s family
ARI can cover: a spouse; children under 17, and dependent children aged 18–25 who are unmarried and studying; dependent parents of the investor or spouse; minor siblings under guardianship. The reunification application is filed with the investor’s application and depends on its approval.
