Portugal digital nomad visa
quote after we review the task
The Portugal digital nomad visa (D8) is for people who work remotely for an employer or clients located outside Portugal. The key condition is an average monthly income over the last 3 months of at least 4 minimum wages: €3,680 a month in 2026 (4 × €920). There are two versions: a temporary stay visa of up to 1 year, or a residence visa after which AIMA issues a permit for 2 years, renewable for 3 years. Facts checked against the MNE and AIMA websites on 9 October 2026.
What we do
- Check whether your work fits the D8: employment or independent activity, and where your clients are.
- Prepare the 3-month income evidence and the tax residence document.
- Choose the visa type: temporary stay, or residence followed by a permit.
- Prepare the visa file and the AIMA application.
- Plan tax after the move and the route to permanent residence.
What we need from you
- Employment contract or employer letter; for freelancers, client contracts or proof of services provided.
- Income statements for the last 3 months.
- A document confirming your tax residence.
- Apostilled criminal record certificate and travel insurance.

Temporary stay or residence
The MNE offers digital nomads two kinds of national visa. The temporary stay visa lasts up to 1 year and suits people who want to live and work from Portugal without moving to a permit. The residence visa is the one used to apply to AIMA: it leads to the 2-year permit, its renewal and later permanent residence. Income and document requirements are the same for both: 4 minimum wages on average over the last 3 months and proof of tax residence. If the goal is relocating with family and building towards permanent status, we choose the residence visa.
| Temporary stay | Residence visa | |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | Up to 1 year | Visa for entry and the AIMA application |
| Permit | Stay on the visa, no AIMA card | 2 years, then 3 years |
| Route to permanent residence | Requires switching to a permit | After 5 years of permits |
AIMA permit after entry
A D8 residence visa holder applies to AIMA with: a passport, the valid visa, a declaration from the foreign employer or client confirming the employment link or service relationship, and a declaration of residential address in Portugal stating the basis for using the home. The permit lasts 2 years, then renews for 3 years. After 5 years, permanent residence opens up.
Tax for digital nomads
After the move you may become a Portuguese tax resident: more than 183 days of presence, or a home you intend to keep as a habitual residence. The NHR regime is closed to new residents. IFICI, with a 20% rate for 10 years, is available only for qualifying activities on the official list and requires confirmation by the competent body. Crystal Tax models the tax on your income.
