German citizenship in 2026 is acquired by naturalisation after 5 years of lawful habitual residence under Section 10 of the Nationality Act (StAG). Applicants need German at B1, a citizenship test, self-support without social benefits, a clean criminal record and a qualifying residence status on the filing date. The 3-year fast track has been repealed, and the requirement to give up a previous nationality has been removed from German law. Checked against the text of the StAG on 09.10.2026.

What we do

  • Count your residence time and check whether your current status qualifies.
  • Check income, language, the test and any obstacles.
  • Prepare the application and documents for the naturalisation authority.
  • Include your spouse and minor children where possible.
  • Plan a switch to the right status if you are under Section 24 today.

What we need from you

  • Passport, residence permit, records of all periods of residence.
  • B1 German certificate and Einbürgerungstest result.
  • Proof of income: employment contract, payslips, tax assessments.
  • Birth and marriage certificates with translations.

Naturalisation requirements under Section 10 StAG

RequirementWhat the law says
Residence5 years of lawful habitual residence in Germany
Status on filingUnlimited right of residence (permanent residence), EU Blue Card or a permit for a purpose outside the exclusion list. Permits under Section 24 (temporary protection), 16b (studies), 20a (Opportunity Card) and others on the list do not qualify
LivelihoodNo benefits under Books II and XII of the Social Code; exceptions for full-time work in at least 20 of the last 24 months, or the spouse of such a person living with a minor child
LanguageGerman at B1 (Section 10(4)); for children under 16, age-appropriate
KnowledgeKnowledge of the legal and social order and living conditions in Germany (test)
DeclarationsCommitment to the free democratic basic order and to Germany's historical responsibility
Criminal recordNo conviction for an unlawful act (with statutory exceptions)

What has changed

  • The 3-year fast track for special integration (Section 10(3)) is marked as repealed in the current text.
  • Giving up a previous nationality: the provisions requiring it (Sections 12 and 25 StAG) have been removed. Germany permits dual citizenship.
  • Family: a spouse and minor children may be naturalised with the applicant even with less than 5 years in Germany (Section 10(2)).

How Ukrainian law treats dual citizenship is something we check separately for each client before filing.

Citizenship for Ukrainians under temporary protection

A Section 24 permit is on the list of statuses that exclude naturalisation (Section 10(1) no. 2 StAG). To apply, you need another status on the filing date: permanent residence, an EU Blue Card or an employment permit. The plan to citizenship therefore usually has two steps: switching from Section 24 to an employment or business ground, then naturalisation. How years spent under temporary protection count towards the 5 years is decided by the naturalisation authority case by case; we check this before filing.

A company or property does not lead to citizenship. Germany has no citizenship by investment. The only route is lawful residence on a qualifying status and meeting the Section 10 conditions.

Procedure

1
Status and residence check
We establish the date on which 5 years are completed and whether your status qualifies.
2
Language and test
B1 and the citizenship test are passed before filing.
3
Application
Filed with the naturalisation authority (Einbürgerungsbehörde) at your place of residence.
4
Certificate
Citizenship is acquired when the naturalisation certificate is handed over.
